Porirua Song

Our song "Porirua"

Porirua City is a truly special place. There is something for everyone. We work together as a community and cherish our ability to spend time with family and friends in our beautiful natural environment. We have a diverse community and wanted to share our love of our city and the community in a song.

Singer-songwriter and Porirua City Council employee Steph Casey worked closely with staff, community and representatives from Ngāti Toa, and Whitireia Polytechnic, to create a song which represents Porirua.

We asked Steph about the process of writing the song and here’s what she said:

It was great to have the opportunity to write a song for Porirua and I wanted to create an uplifting, feel-good song that celebrated its people, culture and places. To cover all 20 Porirua suburbs was a bit of a mouthful in the lyrics but we wanted to include everybody! The children’s choir represents our tamariki and Porirua’s young population, with over a third of people being under 25 years of age. The karakia reflects our tangata whenua, and the Samaon part of the song our Pasifika communities."

There is a beautiful karakia in the song, prepared and performed for us by Kahurangi Moeahu of Ngāti Toa:

Whakapiri mai

Whakatata mai

Ki te whenua haumako o Ngāti Toa

He oranga āwhinuku

He oranga āwhirangi

He oranga mō te marea

Kā puta, Kā ora!

Come together

Come closer

To the sacred land of Ngāti Toa

To uphold

To uplift

The coming of new life!
