Waste Minimisation Grants

We want to reduce the amount of waste in Porirua and enable our community and businesses to do it too. This grants scheme will help everyone work towards Porirua becoming a low-waste city.

Waste Minimisation Grants

Our Waste Minimisation Grants provide financial assistance for local waste minimisation initiatives that contribute to reducing waste in Porirua.

What kind of projects will be eligible to receive funding?

Priority will be given to projects that are at the upper levels of the waste hierarchy, for example, projects that focus on reduction, redesign, reuse, repair or repurposing.

Avoid unnecessary resource use and waste by designing waste out.

Reduce the quantity, toxicity and ecological footprint of consumption.

Reuse or repurpose products and components for the same purpose, or repurpose them for another use that does not reduce their value or require further processing.

Recycle/compost - recover and process materials to make the same or different materials of similar value when reuse is no longer possible.

Recover value (eg energy) from materials that cannot be reused or recycled.

Treat the waste with processes to remove or reduce potential harm before disposing of the waste safely on land set aside for that purpose.

Porirua City Council also has priority waste streams and outcomes which are outlined in the Waste Management and Minimisation Plan 2023-2029 and our associated Local Action Plan.

The priority waste streams and outcomes are:

  • organic waste
  • construction and demolition waste
  • development of resource recovery services or infrastructure
  • community action delivering behaviour change.

Projects that focus on the waste streams above and are at the upper levels of the waste hierarchy will be given priority.
