Declaring and classifying land as reserve at Taihuka Park

Declaring land at 31 & 36 Steyne Ave, known as Taihuka Park, and classifying the land as recreation reserve

In 2011 the land described as Pt Lots 8 and 22 DP 407, at 34 and 36 Steyne Avenue, Plimmerton (‘the land’) was purchased for a seaside reserve.  The houses were removed in June 2018 and the park was developed.  In 2019 the land was added to the Reserves Management Plan.

The Proposal

The land was purchased as fee simple land and therefore is not currently held as reserve.  In order for the land to be managed as reserve under the Reserves Act 1977 (the Act), it needs to be declared as reserve under Section 14 of the Act and classified as recreation reserve.

Section 17 of the Act states that recreation reserves are areas that are used for recreation and sporting activities and the physical welfare and enjoyment of the public, and for the protection of the natural environment and beauty of the countryside, with emphasis on the retention of open spaces and on outdoor recreational activities, including recreational tracks in the countryside.

If objections to the land being declared as reserve are received these must be considered before a decision is made on whether the land should be declared as reserve and classified as recreation reserve.

Submissions and objections close on Wednesday, 26 August 2020 at 5pm.

Once submissions and objections are received a hearing to consider the application will be held on Thursday, 1 October 2020.
