A meeting of the full Porirua City Council was held this morning, Thursday 27 June.
Here is a wrap of what was covered:
Porirua Mayor Anita Baker provided an update of her activities since the last Council meeting, including reopening the renovated Mana Medical Centre; attending the New Zealand Ballroom Dance event at Te Rauparaha Arena; Porirua Business Month events; blessing of new Kainga Ora homes in Porirua East; Mana Arts Society opening; welcoming 58 residents in a citizenship ceremony; attending Pulse games; the Pacifica Leadership Symposium, the Duke of Edinburgh awards; Plimmerton Midwinter Dip; an Eid Mubarak ceremony; an event at the Whānau Centre in Cannons Creek; the winter exhibitions opening at Pātaka; a planting event in Plimmerton at Taupō Swamp; and the Kai Tahi blessing.
Council then went through and accepted recommendations from the two Te Puna Kōrero meetings held since the last full Council meeting.
It was then into Long-term Plan (LTP) mode, where Council officially adopted the LTP 2024-34. The LTP sets the city’s budget and direction for the next 10 years, and has a clear focus on infrastructure and essential services.
The councillors and Mayor then set the rates for the 2024/25 year, with the average increase being 17.5%. The exact rates for each property will be loaded to our property search page on 30 July, and ratepayers will receive their rates notices via email or letter from 31 July.
Finally, Council received a report providing an update on the city’s strategic risks. This type of report helps Council to be better informed when making important decisions for Porirua, meaning any risks can be identified and managed.
There were five speakers in the public forum. Speakers from Titahi Bay, Titahi Bay School, the Titahi Bay Surf Life Saving Club and representing Ngāti Toa all thanked Council for including the upgrade to the Rukutane Pump Station near Titahi Bay in the LTP and spoke more about the importance of that work.
