A wetland project designed to improve the quality of water flowing into Te Awarua-o-Porirua Harbour and help address flooding has been given a $2 million boost by the Government.
Environment Minister Nick Smith recently announced grants for freshwater improvement projects across New Zealand and Porirua was among the recipients.
Porirua’s Awarua Wetland project received funding of $1,971,625 to help construct a one hectare stormwater treatment wetland at the eastern end of Elsdon Park, between Porirua School and Takapūwāhia.
The wetland is designed to improve the quality of stormwater discharged into Te Awarua-o-Porirua. It will also help reduce flooding in the area, in support of a wider flood reduction strategy for the city.
Porirua Mayor Mike Tana was grateful for the grant, which allowed Porirua City to do important environmental work.
“Our beautiful harbour is our taonga and protecting its health is a priority for us. This funding helps us to do that. People have been talking about doing this for such a long time, now is our opportunity.”
The government funding was applied for by Wellington Water Limited and the Council, and the result was a great example of partnership in action, he said.
“By working together we achieve more for our city and harbour, at a lower cost to ratepayers.”
The wetland will treat contaminated runoff from over 40ha of developed land, improving the water quality of the lower reaches of the Rangituhi and Mahinawa Streams.
It will also create flood storage that will help reduce the risk of flooding to Porirua School, Ngatitoa Street, Tangare Drive and Semple Street.
Landscaping, including a boardwalk and viewing platform, will also be installed.
“We will be working with the community, surrounding schools and Ngāti Toa to make the most of the opportunity to connect the community with our waterways,” Mayor Tana said.
