The popular Colonial Knob Walkway, commonly known as “the steps”, is getting some much-needed maintenance work in the coming weeks. At the moment the track surface of the steps is rough and gets very wet in places, so surface improvements and drainage will be carried out. This is the best time of year to do it, past the summer period where it gets the highest use, and before winter really sets in.
While the steps are out of action, there are still ways to reach the peak of Rangituhi, including
Te Ara Utiwai – one of Porirua’s best walks.
Some car parks next to Camp Elsdon are also being used by contractors until the project is complete, likely in May.
There are still ways to reach your step goals or take that climb to one of the best panoramic views you’ll get over Porirua, looking towards Kaikoura south and Taranaki north on a clear day. The farm track off Raiha St and Te Ara Utiwai (the latter accessible from next to Camp Elsdon) will remain available, while the existing mountain bike tracks below our beloved maunga are open to use.
