The Hidden Disabilities Sunflower Scheme is up and running at Porirua City Council.
The sunflower is a discreet tool for people to share that they have a disability or condition that may not be immediately apparent – and that they may need a helping hand, understanding, or more time in shops or public spaces.
People wear a sunflower lanyard or wrist band to indicate they have a hidden disability, and staff are trained to recognise the symbol and what it represents.
The lanyards and bands can be purchased online, and we also have a small supply available for customers who need them and don’t have their own. These are located at the front counter of the main Council building, the city library, Pātaka, Arena Aquatics and Arena Fitness.
A number of organisations have joined the scheme including most airports, some banks, shopping malls, sports grounds and others, and we’re proud to now be on board.
